According to Urban Dictionary, a dive bar is a “well-worn, unglamorous bar, often cheap, simple selection of drinks to a regular clientele.” If you’d prefer to spend your time at a cozy dive and enjoy a cold $3 pint compared to a $12 cocktail in a chair that looked like it was remodeled from the furniture section of the local thrift store. As Colorado’s dive bars are becoming more and more rare and developments continue to occur, good dive bars are extremely hard to find and it is easier to get distracted by all of the shiny new bars and restaurants opening all over the cities. Fortunately, there are still some remaining classic dives and they deserve your attention too!
Ace-Hi Tavern has been a favourite for bar fans since the year of 1961 when Leo Stillman bought the old Opera House restaurant on historic Washington Avenue. It is not a surprise that one of the Colorado’s best dive bars is located in this town since alcohol was responsible for putting Golden on the map. This bar, being a Western-themed and Colorado-proud with old-fashioned steer horn fancied up with Mardi Gras beads located above the cashier, this dive bar continue to be a place where individuals come after a long day at work or a tough day of classes. Each day you come to Ace-Hi Tavern, you are surprised with fun activities. On Mondays, they offer service industry night, on Tuesdays, they offer a trivia night, on Wednesdays, they offer wicked Wednesday specials, Thursday is when the ladies night & karaoke as well as a dollar tap & well, Friday and Saturday is when people come from a karaoke night, then on a Sunday, there you are able to relax and have a fun day at this bar. Sam’s Bar & Lounge
With a bunch of rave about many of Denver’s iconic bars and numerous of hipster pictures encircling social media, showing the beauty of the old-school bar aesthetics, you probably will not find any hipster at Sam’s Bar & Lounge. In this watering hole that opened 62 years ago, you will also not find any Wi-Fi and will be forced to talk to those in your surroundings. In fact, one of the bar’s chalkboard states, “Talk to each other and get drunk.” Fortunately, this is not a hard thing to do for in this place, there is a big four-sided bar and a few comfortable booths where you are able to chat to the bartender, who pours inexpensive drinks, and other bar goers.

Stopped by since we’ve never been in on our many I70 trips. Lots of seating options. Great for groups. Family friendly if you don’t have picky kids. Our 4 & 7 year old loved it. Limited menu, but our pretzel, antipasti & brisket were all delicious. Steady flow of customers. I think we have stumbled onto a new favorite dive bar.”

The bartenders were awesome. They have a water station for easy access which was very much appreciated later in the night. We stopped for one drink and ended up staying for several hours, such a fun place. The food was standard but super delicious and the cook was a damn sweetheart, so accommodating as he ran our food to us and made sure we had everything we needed. We will absolutely be back.”

Tim Wenger states on TravelStoke that “El Chapultepec will serve you a shot with a deep fried grasshopper in it. That’s all you really need to know about this place, other than the fact that it also serves live jazz every single night and has been around since long before the Ballpark neighborhood was called the Ballpark neighborhood. #divebar.”
